Learn a Natural and Effortless Approach to Meditation

Instinctive Meditation® is a way of learning and practicing meditation so that it becomes the most natural thing in the world for you – a chance to rest deeply, release tension, reclaim your love of life, and emerge refreshed. This approach to meditation is grounded in the ancient yoga tradition and in the last 50 years of scientific research on the physiology of meditation.
The secret to effortless meditation is this: you need to find practices and techniques that fit who you are!
Dr. Lorin Roche has been researching and teaching this approach since 1970 and has worked with tens of thousands of people to develop a meditation practice that helps them to thrive in their daily lives.
This course will provide you with the skills, knowledge, and framework to create your own nourishing meditation practices that you look forward to every day.

Rigid rules in meditation can prevent access to deep relaxation and joy

Meditation is now mainstream and is recommended by many health professionals to alleviate stress, overwhelm, exhaustion, feeling disconnected from life, etc.
The problem is most people don’t know how to create a meditation practice that works for them. There are rules to follow that don’t always make sense – sit still in uncomfortable positions, stop your thoughts, focus on just one thing, block out your emotions, don’t be so attached!
People try meditating with all of these rules but without receiving skillful guidance that honors their individuality, they often give up. “Oh I tried meditation and it didn’t work. I had lots of thoughts. My legs fell asleep and I was so uncomfortable that I couldn’t focus. I just can’t make my mind blank!”
This means that a wonderful source of relaxation, nourishment, and restoration can easily get lost.

Find Meditation Practices That You Love

The good news is we don’t have to abide by restrictive rules and limited definitions of meditation.
There are an unlimited number of ways to meditate and through Instinctive Meditation we open to these possibilities. Enjoying a beautiful sunset, luxuriating in a warm bath, feeling the thrill of riding a wave, relishing a delicious meal with dear friends – all of these are potential doorways into our meditation practice.
This training will provide you with a comprehensive framework and core guiding principles that will help you to:
- Discover your natural ways into meditation
- Navigate your inner experience skillfully and tenderly
- Bring the benefits of meditation into your everyday life.

Course Overview
An Embodied 4-Week Meditation Journey
Dr Lorin Roche has created a comprehensive model of meditation which identifies 8 foundational elements of a meditation practice. These 8 elements come together in a seamless flow that you will learn over the course of 4 weeks.
Each week we will practice the 8-part flow in its entirety, allowing you to experience the practice in your body. Then we will dive into two of these elements to have a deeper experience of each. You will learn how to weave them into your own personal Instinctive Meditation practice.
Here are some of the ways we will explore these elements:
Live Classes: We meet live once a week for a 90-minute class with Dr Lorin Roche and Michael McDowall. You will be guided in the creation of your own meditation practice and explore two elements of that practice each week. You will be meditating from the first class – following your own desire and learning what works for you.
Guided Practice Sessions: Twice a week you can join a 1-hour practice session with Michael. This guided meditation time is an opportunity for you to immerse yourself in this style of practice and get direct experience of each week’s key themes. Each class will also have Q&A and discussion time.
The live classes are recorded and available for you to revisit the following day.
Additional Class Resources: You will have access to recorded audio meditations and written articles for each of these elements through our private online platform.
The 8 Elements of Your Meditation Practice
Each Week We Explore 2 Elements

Week 1: Welcoming Desire and Saluting the Senses
Setting your intention: We begin by asking ourselves, what is the doorway for our practice today? It may be a quality we want to be infused with, engaging with an activity we love, or recalling a timeless moment. We develop a feast of possibilities to explore in our practice.
Honoring your senses: We engage with the world through our senses. A rich meditation practice explores our experience of both inner and outer worlds through all of our senses.

Week 2: Blessing This Body and Cherishing the Breath
Embracing embodiment: Meditation is not just a mental experience, it’s a fully embodied one. By learning to bring a sense of gratitude for the gift of embodiment to our practice, we open ourselves to a fuller integration of our lived experience.
Honoring our breath: Breathing connects us to all of life. It’s a nourishing rhythm of giving and receiving with all of the plants and trees around us. Honoring our breath awakens and enlivens the prana energy flowing through us.

Week 3: Embracing Movement and Attending to Tension
Being free to move: Having a meditation practice does not mean we need to sit still. In our practice we will let our inner wisdom move us as we explore parts of ourselves that are otherwise hidden in the confines of stillness.
Attuning to tension: When we enter a restful state, our inner wisdom presents us with what needs to be healed. Difficulties in our lives, emotions, and complicated relationships all come to our awareness through feelings of tension in our body and emotions. We learn to attune to that tension, treat ourselves tenderly, and welcome all of our experience.

Week 4: Soothing Mantra and Luxurious Return
Use of a mantra: Learn to use a word or two, derived from our desires or intentions, as a doorway into our practice and as a soothing balm for places that hold tension. We enter into the energy of the mantra instead of engaging in rote repetition.
The importance of transition: Meditation is a sacred time that requires a conscious integration into our day. Learning the art of transition brings the benefits of our practice into our lives and also ensures we are ready to relate to the world again.

Meet Your Teachers

Lorin Roche, PhD
Founder of RSSM
For 56 years Dr Lorin Roche has been exploring the Ancient Yoga Meditation traditions as described in the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra. He is a pioneer in developing personalized meditation practices, designing the techniques around an individual’s unique inner nature. He was awarded a PhD from the University of California, Irvine, where he has done extensive research on meditation and meditative experiences.
He is the author of six books on meditation including The Radiance Sutras, Meditation Made Easy, and with Camille Maurine, Meditation Secrets for Women.
Lorin’s teachings help students feel that meditation is more like an innate skill that you are remembering than a technique that you are learning. This work is aimed at activating an individual’s internal guidance systems and bringing forth your instinctive knowing, so that you can safely practice meditation without being dependent upon gurus, systems, or external authorities.

Michael McDowall
Senior RSSM Teacher
Yoga and meditation have always been part of Michael’s life thanks to his mum. He began meditating as a teenager listening to cassettes that had him floating with the clouds while lying on the floor in the sun. His first practices of Yoga Asana were out of a book his mother had lying around in his twenties.
For over 20 years Michael has been studying wellness in one form or another practicing Homeopathy, Bowen Therapy, and Reiki, whilst at the same time working in technical problem solving and people leader roles. He completed a 350 hour Yoga teacher training in 2011, and has been studying with Lorin and Camille since 2016 and now helps develop and teach Instinctive Meditation® teacher training programs.
“I love it when I see people GET IT!!!! That meditation can be a rich sensory, enlivening experience while producing all the benefits of deep rest, relaxation, healing, and clarity.”
